About us

OBBOTEC was founded in 2018 with the aim to develop unique solutions for the reuse of bio and plastic waste streams. OBBOTEC's technologies were previously developed by inventor and chemical engineer Obbo Hazewinkel who worked in the petrochemical industry. With his inventions, plastics from waste streams can now be recycled at a high quality or transformed into a (partly green) fuel. OBBOTEC is the owner and incubator of these technologies and has developed two key operational applications. In this way, OBBOTEC contributes to a circular economy and a sustainable world.

Plastic Waste

McKinsey & Company predicts that in the year 2030, 560,000,000 tons of plastic will be used in the world. About 120,000,000 tons is for long-term use, such as the plastic used in cars. The remaining 440,000,000 tons of plastic are consumer plastics such as plastic packaging. Often, plastic has a negative impact on the environment at the end of its life.

The plastic then ends up in a waste incineration plant that emits CO2 or simply in the environment. In order to create a sustainable world, it is essential that the plastic is reused and the current linear fossil-based life cycle of plastic is made highly circular.

Our Mission

OBBOTEC wants to make a significant contribution to the high-quality circularity of bio and plastic waste streams. In this process, OBBOTEC focuses on the waste streams that consist of plastics (PP & PE) and non-recyclable mixtures of biomaterials and plastics. Incinerating plastic is bad for the environment as CO2 is emitted, and it provides limited energy yields. Moreover, the source material is lost. OBBOTEC's technologies are a more sustainable alternatives and therefore contribute to a circular economy and a greener world.

Our Vision

To meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, a combination of many different initiatives is needed. OBBOTEC believes that the necessary technologies to address the energy and materials transition are currently available, and it would be possible to achieve the Paris 2050 targets by 2030. SPEX and HydroCat are part of these technologies. In our opinion, what is lacking is priority, decisiveness, and cooperation. OBBOTEC aims to build a coalition to accelerate the energy transition by promoting this vision and connecting as many partners and technologies as possible. This is called PACT 2030; Partnership for Accelerated Carbon Transition.

PACT 2030 is an initiative with other companies who share a joined vision on the energy transition based on the integration of key technologies, full circularity of carbon, negative emissions, and cooperation between sectors.

PACT 2030 believes that the energy transition:

  1. Can still be based on the use of hydrocarbons and without a complete exit of these substances.
  2. Should be based on the integration of hydrogen, biomass, and carbon economies.
  3. Should be constructed around the full circularity of carbon, closing the 'carbon loop' by maximizing recycling of carbon, plastics, and CO2 instead of banning it.
  4. Should focus on cooperation and partnerships between industries, institutions, and technologies.
  5. Requires action now to accelerate the change to get the basics in place by 2030, as these technologies are largely already available. Should not pass on our responsibility to future generations.
  6. The Netherlands offers an ideal infrastructure and breeding ground to become a leading delta for the energy transition.
